I remember confronting a fallen hero when the chair (Gene Easley) of my very first Home Group slipped after 25 sober years. It was a devastating loss to me because he not only lost his sobriety he drank himself to death all in the matter of six short months. In the world of recovery we all are day counters as staying on the beam can be a matter of life and death. But I’ve come to see that all of life is lived day by day
whether it is as;
- parent
- spouse
- employee
- friend
- sibling
We all measure our lives in daily increments and the temptation to ‘cash it in’ on account of this circumstance or that seems to be an ever present option. My observation to that the perch upon which we all find ourselves is being pulled and yanked from seemingly all directions
So when my sponsor and I went to the funeral of old Gene Easley I was a very much disillusioned newcomer. The graveside ceremony was a very morose affair, lots of people just shaking their heads in disbelief. I thought to myself how am I to make it if old Gene couldn’t?
Gary and I then had a memorable meal and he shared with me a timeless truth
- Gary said there comes a moment
- when we have but one choice
- the choice is to become
YOUR OWN HERO
- At that moment you realize
- all you possess is control over your own decision
- only can decide to be courageous
